February 2004

MINUTES OF KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MEETING

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE COUNCIL # 13407

  • Meeting Date:  February 9, 2004
  • Location:  Our Lady of the Mountain Parish Hall
  • Corrections:  It is requested that any errors or omissions in these minutes be brought up at our next general meeting on March 8, 2004.
  • Roll Call of Officers:  All officers were present except the Chaplain, Deputy Grand Knight and Outside Guard.
  • Grand Knight’s Report:
    • Activity Calendar:  Tom Spellman, Geeno Valdez and Dennis Mellecker are working on an activity calendar for the Council for the year.
    • OregonState Council Activity Report:  Blank copies of this report were distributed to the attendees.  It was requested that we start keeping records of the hours we worked on the various types of activity types listed on this report.  These hours will be compiled at the Council level and then forwarded to the Oregon State General Program Director.
    • Wive’s Badges:  The format for the wive’s badges was selected.  It was moved and approved that we proceed with the purchase of these badges.  The cost per badge will be $7.00 (The original estimate was $5 but the cost increased with the selection of the magnetic clasp).  Each member will pay for the cost of his wife’s badge.
    • Official Charter Certificate:  We received this impressive Charter Certificate.  One full size copy of this certificate will be made as insurance against possible loss of the original.  An 8” x 10” copy will be made for each of the charter members.  The original will be suitably mounted.
    • Columbian Squires Circle:  Ramundo Valdez (Geeno’s son) has expressed interest in helping to start a Squires Circle for the youth of the Parish.  The age range is 10-18 years.  A minimum of 10 boys is required to start such a circle.  Girls will be welcomed to participate in the Squire’s activities.  The possibility of forming such a circle will be investigated.
    • Tax ID Number:  The Council has applied for a tax ID number so that we can set up a bank account and start receiving tax-deductible contributions.
    • Membership Cards:  These cards are now available for all members who have paid their dues.  Annual dues are $25.00.
    • Publicity:  An article on our Council was included in the February/March issue of the Oregon State Council Columbian Newsletter.  Our participation in the Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration on Dec. 12, 03 was featured along with the fact of our recent formation.  We expect to be included in the March ’04 issue of the Columbian Magazine.
    • 2nd and 3rd Degree Exemplification:  This exemplification will be held on Saturday, February 21 at St. Joseph’s church in Roseburg.  We expect that 3 of our 1st degree Knights will participate in this exemplification.
    • Lenten Soup Dinner:  Our Council has volunteered to host the Lenten soup dinner on Friday, February 27.  We will also help to lead the stations of the cross after the dinner.  We will need 6 or 7 volunteers to cover both the dinner and the stations of the cross.  The dinner will start at 6:00 PM and stations of the cross at about 7:00 PM.
    • St. Patrick’s Day Celebration:  Sometime during the week of March 17 the Knights at Shepard of the Valley Church will host a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration/Dinner.  By all accounts this is a great event!  The specific day and time will be provided in the near future.
    • Council’s Web Site:  Paul Steele is in the process of setting a web site for the Council.  The proposed format for this web site was distributed by e-mail for comment.  It looks great!  This web site will be used to host our monthly newsletter, minutes of meetings, calendar of events, photos of council activities etc.  Members who have content to add to this site can e-mail the content to Paul at paul@steelenet.us (At some point a password will be set up to give members direct access to the site for changing content).  It was moved and approved that Paul will select the domain name.  A popular candidate was kofcashland.org.
  • Financial Secretary Report:

Membership cards are now available for the 36 charter members.

Current assets are approximately $500 with some bills to be paid.  After all dues are paid our assets will be at approximately $980.

It was suggested that we build up our assets to about $2000 to allow us to invest in future activities.

·        Chancellor Report:

At Fr. Joe’s request Joe Cochran gave a presentation to the RCIA.  At a future time this presentation will be repeated for all members of the parish who are interested.

·        Program Director Report:

Geeno restated his son’s interest in helping to form a Squire Circle in the parish (see discussion above).

·        Treasurer:

Our Council needs a treasurer!  Our Financial Secretary, Lou DePoyster, is temporarily filling this role.  We need to give Lou some relief as soon as possible.

·        Good of the Order:

Prayer Requests for specific health related issues of Brother Knights and Families. [Specifics will not be shown on public web site.]
